Juvenile Alewife Passage through a Compact Hydropower Turbine Designed for Fish Safety

چکیده

Hydropower is a valuable renewable energy source, but its effects on the downstream passage of many riverine fish species are not well understood. Turbines that designed to function as safe routes for being developed with goal mitigating hydropower operations environment. In this paper, we present results study conducted juvenile life stage Alewife Alosa pseudoharengus, major migratory Atlantic coast North America. The test was at small plant located in Freedom, Maine, single Restoration Hydro Turbine (RHT) operating under 7.5 m gross head. Groups 140–170 were released into intake 55-cm-diameter RHT and recaptured specialized trap turbine discharge outlet. combined immediate 48-h survival rates (±95% CI) all treatments, corrected control mortality, 98.2 ± 2.0% 100.0 6.6%, respectively. Alewives through runner region also captured high-speed video. demonstrate RHT, which safety, an effective way pass alosines facilities.

Fish Passage Assessment of an Advanced Hydropower Turbine and Conventional Turbine Using Blade-Strike Modeling

Hydropower is the largest renewable energy source in the world. However, in the Columbia and Snake River basins, several species of Pacific salmon and steelhead have been listed for protection under the Endangered Species Act due to significant declines of fish population. Dam operators and design engineers are thus faced with the task of making hydroelectric facilities more fish friendly throu...

Migration depth and residence time of juvenile salmonids in the forebays of hydropower dams prior to passage through turbines or juvenile bypass systems: implications for turbine-passage survival

Little is known about the three-dimensional depth distributions in rivers of individually marked fish that are in close proximity to hydropower facilities. Knowledge of the depth distributions of fish approaching dams can be used to understand how vulnerable fish are to injuries such as barotrauma as they pass through dams. To predict the possibility of barotrauma injury caused by pressure chan...

Fish Passage Technologies: Protection at Hydropower Facilities (Part 6 of 11)

he implementation of downstream mitigation for fish passage at hydropower facilities has three distinct goals: to transport fish downstream; to prevent fish from entrainment in turbine intakes; and to move fish, in a timely and safe manner, through a reservoir.1 A range of mitigation methods for downstream passage and for prevention of turbine entrainment exist, and some have been applied with ...

A novel marine bioinvasion vector: Ichthyochory, live passage through fish

Many species of Indo-Pacific holobenthic foraminifera have been introduced and successfully established sustainable populations in the Mediterranean Sea over the past few decades. However, known natural and anthropogenic vectors do not explain how these species were introduced long distances from their origin. We present evidence for a novel marine bioinvasion vector explaining this long-distan...

Review of Pump as Turbine (PAT) for Micro-Hydropower

Micro-hydropower projects are the excellent alternative for electricity generation in remote areas. These projects can be installed on small streams, rivers, and channels without any recognizable effect on environment. The only problem in micro-hydro projects is the high cost of turbine, for which Pump as Turbine (PAT) is a successful solution. An objective of the present study is to review the...
